Case Name:
Stewart Watson v. Parkgate L.P.

Settlement Amount - $285,000

Case Description:
Eighty-three year-old Erma Watson ran a bathtub full of water on May 26, 2006, and got into the bathtub to take a bath. Erma sustained third degree burns over a large part of her body because of the excessively hot temperature of the water. Ms. Watson died later that night alone in her apartment as a result of the burns she sustained. When the temperature of the water in Ms. Watson's apartment was measured, it was 180 degrees at ten seconds and 190 degrees at sixty seconds. Residential hot water heaters should be set at 120 degrees. In one second, hot water of 160 degrees results in third degree burns. The hot water heater in Ms. Watson's apartment complex was in the basement with open access for anyone to enter and tamper with it.
